For the first time ever, all three components of the Iowa Spirit Squads competed recently at the Universal Cheerleaders Association/Universal Dance Association College Cheerleading and Dance Team Nationals in Orlando, Fla.

The cheerleading squad, the dance team, and Herky represented the University of Iowa well at the national meet: the cheerleading squad finished 20th in the nation; Herky placed 10th; and the dance team finished eighth with their pom routine and 10th with their jazz routine.

Iowa Spirit Coordinator Gregg Niemiec was pleased with the squad’s performances at nationals. “The weekend went well,” he says. “It was great to represent the University of Iowa at nationals and bring some recognition to Iowa.”

With nationals—and the two-a-day practices to prepare for them—behind them, Niemiec and the spirit squads have a moment to catch their breaths, but only a moment. “Now we are on to supporting the Iowa basketball teams and Iowa wrestling through the rest of their seasons,” says Niemiec.
