Designers make opera’s visual aspects sing

Renowned scenic and costume designer Margaret Wenk-Kuchlbauer and others in the UI Performing Arts Production Unit have taken an epic opera, La Traviata, and scaled it to fit a more intimate performance venue, the Englert Theatre. The production, which will run Jan. 27–30, is staged by former opera singer Valorie Goodall, who spoke about the Production Unit’s efforts:

“Last June, scenic and costume designer Margaret Wenk-Kuchlbauer flew to my home in Boulder, Colo., to show me her remarkable and unique vision of the scenic design of La Traviata, for the Englert Theatre’s stage, and it was a perfect fit.”
