Time to get familiar with the Extreme Weather Protocol

As Iowa prepares for its first potentially severe winter weather this season, UI employees are encouraged to reacquaint themselves with the University of Iowa Extreme Weather Protocol, which can be found in the UI Operations Manual online at www.uiowa.edu/~our/opmanual/ii/22.htm.

Classes canceled

The University of Iowa is canceling all on-campus evening classes that begin at or after 4:30 p.m., Feb. 1, and day classes that begin before 10 a.m., Feb. 2, because of winter weather. Students with clinical duties should consult with their preceptors or supervising faculty.

University offices remain open in accordance with the UI Operations Manual. Employees should report as scheduled, safety permitting. Information about morning classes and more details at www.uiowa.edu.

As the policy states, whenever possible, the University continues to function during inclement weather. Regularly scheduled classes meet to the extent that students and faculty are able to travel to campus and attend classes. Units of the University providing essential services must remain open and in operation. A complete list of those units may be found at the link above. At all times, individuals should use good judgment and avoid serious risks in traveling to campus or in attending classes.

The University makes every effort to avoid canceling classes. Students should expect that classes will meet and plan accordingly. Even though classes are not canceled, students should exercise good judgment in deciding whether to travel to campus.

If weather conditions are so extreme that central administration decides it is necessary to postpone or cancel classes or any other University activity, the Office of University Relations will alert the campus through a variety of venues, including Hawk Alert, the UI home page, UI Facebook and Twitter accounts, and the UI Severe Weather web page at www.uiowa.edu/homepage/severe-weather. Administrators in University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics and the College of Dentistry will make decisions about their own operations during inclement weather and alert their constituents as needed.

Meanwhile, employees are encouraged to monitor local media for the latest forecasts, cancellations, and other weather-related information.
