The lowdown on The Rivalry: Written by Norman Corwin, The Rivalry contains dialogue taken from the original transcripts of the 1858 Lincoln-Douglas debates, a pivotal moment in American history. The Rivalry highlights the competition between Lincoln and Douglas as they tackle the most controversial issues of the time—slavery and freedom. The Rivalry also brings to light the two men’s willingness to put their differences aside for the good of the country. The play highlights issues of divisiveness and unity that are still alive in modern politics.
