Children invited to eco-friendly art workshops

Children age 4 and older are invited to participate in monthly art workshops beginning Saturday, March 3, from 10:30 a.m. to noon at the University of Iowa Old Capitol Museum. UI art student Emily Schaum will show children how to make works of art from recycled and every-day materials.

The workshops are offered in conjunction with the current Old Capitol exhibit, Art|Iowa: Inspired by Landscape.

The workshops are free and open to the public, but a donation of $3 per participant is suggested. Space is limited, so participants are encouraged to call the museum at 319-335-0548 to reserve a spot.

For the first workshop, participants will create ornamental storage containers using glass jars and/or bottles and acrylic paint. Participants are encouraged to bring clean, label-free containers from home to decorate.

Future workshops include:

  • “Salt-dough Animals,” March 31
  • “Potato Stamping,” April 21
  • “Eggshell Mosaics,” May 26
  • “Handmade Paper and Dried Flower Cards,” June 9

More information about Old Capitol is available at the museum’s website.
