The University of Iowa, its National Advanced Driving Simulator (NADS), and driving safety researchers Dan McGehee and Omar Ahmad are featured in a documentary, Life Behind the Wheel: A Roadmap for Safety, that airs this weekend on the Discovery Channel.
McGehee is director of the UI Public Policy Center’s Human Factors and Vehicle Safety Research Program and adjunct associate professor in the College of Engineering and College of Public Health; Ahmad is the operations director at the UI College of Engineering’s NADS.
The documentary, produced by the Discovery Channel and Discovery Education in partnership with Toyota, presents the comprehensive look at safe driving habits at 7 a.m., Saturday, March 3, and 7 a.m., Saturday, May 5. The show will air again in the fall.
In promoting the documentary, Discovery Channel notes that today’s driving safety statistics are sobering.
- Vehicle crashes are the single greatest cause of death for teenagers.
- A driver is eight to 23 times more likely to be in a crash or near-crash if texting while driving.
- 70 percent of all child car seats in the U.S. are improperly installed.
- Fatality rates per mile driven for 75-79 year olds are more than four times as high as those for 30-59 year olds.
