John Mikelson, veterans’ advisor with the University of Iowa Veterans Center, was recently recognized with the Outstanding Employer Support of the Guard and Reserve (ESGR) Committee Volunteer of the Year Award from ESGR Area 6.
He received the award at the ESGR Annual Training Conference in West Des Moines April 9.
Mikelson, who serves as the military outreach director for his area, was recognized because he is always willing to assist when needed and is extremely dedicated to the military units that he supports, both the Army Guard and Army Reserves, according to his nominators.
Even though Mikelson’s primary role is military outreach, he also willingly participates in lunch-and-learn presentations and encourages involvement in ESGR. Mikelson also was recognized because he mentors new volunteers and introduces them to other organizations in the area that have the best interests of the Guard and Reserve in mind. Mikelson has contributed more than 73 hours to ESGR in 2010.
ESGR is a U.S. Department of Defense agency established in 1972. Its mission is to gain and maintain employer support for Guard and Reserve service by recognizing outstanding support, increasing awareness of the law and resolving conflicts. For more information, visit www.iowaesgr.org.
