Sponsored evening of races to benefit UI Children’s Hospital

Racing fans can enjoy a night of action for free at Hawkeye Downs in Cedar Rapids on Friday, May 13. That’s because the usual $10 admission fee for adults will be waived thanks to Van Meter Inc., sponsor of the event.

In return, race fans 18 and older are encouraged to make a monetary donation, with 100 percent of the proceeds directed to Children’s Miracle Network to benefit University of Iowa Children’s Hospital in Iowa City.

The gates at Hawkeye Downs Speedway, 4400 Sixth Street SW in Cedar Rapids, open at 6 p.m. with racing starting at 7 p.m.

The event will feature a celebrity Legend Car Pride Race between Tim Dwight, former standout with the Atlanta Falcons and Iowa Hawkeyes; Eddie Berlin, formerly with the Tennessee Titans, Chicago Bears, and UNI Panthers; CBS2 Sports Director Jared Aarons; and Van Meter executive Mike Gassmann. After the pride race, Van Meter will raffle off footballs autographed by Dwight and Berlin.

In addition, Sierra Manning, a UI Children’s Hospital patient, and her best friend, Brylee Yirkovsky, will be the featured kids riding in the pace car for this event.
