Nite Ride program temporarily suspended over summer

The University of Iowa is temporarily suspending the Nite Ride program effective Tuesday, June 7, due to a significant drop in Nite Ride passengers, according to Chuck Green, UI assistant vice president and director of public safety. The program will resume Monday, Aug. 15.

The Nite Ride program is a free passenger van service for women that is operated by full-time UI security guards through the UI Department of Public Safety.

Green said that the University is averaging around five passengers per night, and this brief suspension will allow the University to save on significant fuel and labor costs. He said he encourages people to continue safe practices such as traveling in groups, using mass transit when available, and utilizing cab services.
