Carver College of Medicine to honor six alumni

The University of Iowa Roy J. and Lucille A. Carver College of Medicine will honor the following six individuals with Distinguished Alumni Awards on Friday, June 10, in Iowa City.

  • Joseph Buckwalter, UI professor and head of orthopaedics and rehabilitation, who helped build a world-famous program that ranks among the best of its kind in the country.
  • Richard Caplan, who introduced curricular programs in medical humanities and biomedical ethics at the UI and helped to develop and advance continuing medical education.
  • Lourdes Cruz, biochemist at the University of the Philippines, who discovered toxins in the venom of marine snails that have contributed to the development of painkillers and biomedical probes to study brain function.
  • Gerald McGowan, who led efforts to alleviate the physician shortage in northwest Iowa through a program to train medical students and family medicine residents.
  • Laura Shawver, a California entrepreneur and cancer researcher who established The Clearity Foundation to provide ovarian cancer patients access to enhanced therapies.
  • Gregory Strayhorn, who has helped schools of medicine at Morehouse College and the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill build reputations for producing talented minority graduates.
