Pegues to step down as Diversity Focus executive director

The Diversity Focus board of directors announces the resignation of Hazel Pegues as the organization’s second executive director, effective July 31. Pegues has served in that role since 2008.

Board president Marcella David, a University of Iowa law professor, praised Pegues for her leadership in her years of service, crediting her with launching creative programming that has enhanced the awareness of diversity as a vital issue for the Cedar Rapids-Iowa City corridor.

Diversity Focus is a nonprofit organization created in 2005 to spearhead efforts to promote and enhance diversity in the corridor. Community businesses, educational institutions, and community organizations support Diversity Focus.

Highlights of Pegues’ tenure include leading Diversity Focus during her first days on the job, which coincided with the floods of 2008. She also launched new programming efforts, including a successful speaker series, which invited speakers to the corridor for presentations that encourage participants to shift the way they think about what it means to create an inclusive environment.

A national search is planned for a new executive director, to be launched later in the summer. An interim executive director will be appointed, and all programming will continue as planned. For more information, visit
