Just say “I Do!” to Summer Rep’s second production

Iowa Summer Rep 2011, “About My Family,” will introduce its second work, the evergreen two-person musical comedy I Do! I Do!, directed by Nathan Halvorson, at 8 p.m., Friday, July 1, in Theatre B of the University of Iowa Theatre Building.

Additional performances will be at 8 p.m., July 2, 6, 8–10, 12–13, 17, 19–20, and 24, and at 2 p.m., July 3. Other productions in the “About My Family” summer are Neil Simon’s domestic comedy Lost in Yonkers (July 14–23) and the Pulitzer-winning lyrical dramaThe Effect of Gamma Rays on Man-in-the-Moon Marigolds (through July 7).

Individual tickets are $26 ($23 for senior citizens, $13 for youth, and $5 for UI students with a valid UI ID). A season package, which includes a ticket to each of the plays, is available for a discount of 20 percent.

Based on the hugely popular 1951 Jan de Hartog play The Fourposter, this two-character musical follows Michael and Agnes through 50 years of marriage (1895–1945). Experience the joy and laughter, success and disappointment, and trials and tribulations of a turn-of-the century couple as they work through the challenges of their marriage, their family, and each other. The set consists solely of their bedroom, dominated by the large fourposter bed in the center of the room. The Broadway production opened in 1966 and ran for 560 performances with Mary Martin and Robert Preston as the original cast.

The 2011 theme-based repertory is a departure from the single-playwright-festival that has been a Summer Rep tradition since 1984.
