UI to assist Iowa Braille School following storm damage

University of Iowa Facilities Management is sending crews to help assess damage and determine if it can provide assistance to the Iowa Braille School, which was damaged by severe weather early Monday, July 11. UI workers are poised to provide power generators, electricians, ground crews to help clear storm debris, and other assistance as needed.

There are no reports of injuries from the storm, although the school’s roof was reportedly damaged.

The Iowa Braille School—a Board of Regents, State of Iowa educational institution located in Vinton—houses and provides skill development, educational training, and other services to students who are legally blind. The school was opened in 1852 as the Iowa College for the Blind. Mary Ingalls, sister of Laura Ingalls Wilder (author of the Little House on the Prairie series), attended the school.
