Daniel Berkowitz will serve as interim director of the University of Iowa School of Library and Information Science (SLIS) for the 2011-12 academic year. He will lead a search for a permanent director, in addition to overseeing the school.
Berkowitz, associate dean of student and administrative affairs for the Graduate College, began his term as interim director on July 1, 2011. SLIS faculty member James Elmborg has served as director of SLIS since 2006. Elmborg has resumed his position as associate professor within the school.
Berkowitz previously served as interim director of UI Press. Graduate College Dean John Keller appointed Berkowitz interim director of SLIS, noting that his experience serving a department in transition made him an ideal person for the job. Berkowitz will also remain a professor in the School of Journalism and Mass Communication.
The UI established SLIS in 1967 to train librarians for academic, public, and special libraries. The program reports to the Graduate College and is accredited by the American Library Association. It offers a master’s program that provides training for librarians and information professionals. The program’s emerging involvement with the digital humanities will be a key focus in the director search.
