Natural history takes center stage at State Fair booth Aug. 17

The Iowa State Fair is ongoing at the Iowa State Fairgrounds in Des Moines, and The University of Iowa will spend Aug. 17 hosting a specialized exhibit on natural history.

What on Earth? The Weird and Wonderful Work of Natural History, presented by the Department of Geoscience in the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, will run from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Fairgoers will be invited to identify mystery objects, including a dinosaur footprint, mammoth tooth, and common fossils. Children will be invited to hunt for their own fossils in a sandbox, and they’ll be allowed to take their finds home with them. Temporary tattoos and postcards also will be given away.

The fair continues through Sunday, Aug. 21. Visit www.iowastatefair.org for more details about the Iowa State Fair.
