State Fair booth offers look at lab science Aug. 16

The Iowa State Fair is ongoing at the Iowa State Fairgrounds in Des Moines, and The University of Iowa will spend Aug. 16 hosting specialized exhibits on diabetes and heartburn awareness and laboratory science.

UI exhibits scheduled for Aug. 16:

  • Operation Diabetes and Heartburn Awareness, presented by the College of Pharmacy, 9 a.m.–2 p.m. Two programs will be offered by pharmacy students and a registered pharmacist. Operation Diabetes seeks to increase awareness by providing blood glucose screenings and monitoring; and Heartburn Awareness provides signs and symptoms of acid reflux and offers ways to monitor the condition. The UI chapter of the American Pharmacists Association Academy of Student Pharmacists sponsors both programs.
  • Explore Lab Science—Discover Your Future, presented by the State Hygienic Laboratory at The University of Iowa, 3–9 p.m. Fairgoers will be able to play “What Kind of Scientist Are You?”—a beanbag toss with holes decorated as various lab careers, including limnology, microbiology, and chemistry. There will be prizes for successfully tossing a bag into one of the holes.

The booth will feature appearances by former Hawkeye standouts. Sherwyn Thorson (football, 1959–61; wrestling, 1960 and 1962) will be at the booth from 2 to 4 p.m.

If you venture away from the UI booth, you can find the Iowa Flood Center (IFC) interactive station in the Department of Natural Resources facility, highlighting the close partnership between the two organizations in Iowa’s efforts to better monitor and prepare for flooding. IFC staff and students will demonstrate IFC online tools, as well as bridge-mounted stream stage sensors.

The fair continues through Sunday, Aug. 21. Visit for more details about the Iowa State Fair.
