Robotics, recreation wrap up State Fair booth activities Aug. 19–21

The Iowa State Fair is ongoing at the Iowa State Fairgrounds in Des Moines, and The University of Iowa will spend the final three days, Aug. 19–21, hosting specialized exhibits on robotics, communication sciences, and recreational services.

UI exhibits scheduled for Aug. 19–21:

  • Strong Ears/Healthy Voices: Keeping Your Communication System in Tip-Top Shape, presented by the Department of Communication Sciences and Disorders in the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, 9 a.m.–2 p.m., Friday, Aug. 19. Fairgoers will be greeted at the booth and invited to participate in quizzes on the effects of noise and music on ears/hearing and voice. Free ear checks, including a visual exam of the external ear and ear canal, will be available. Fairgoers will be able to try out a variety of hearing protection devices. Equipment will be available to test the loudness levels of personal music players.
  • FIRST Tech Challenge Exhibit (with live robots!), presented by the College of Engineering, 3–9 p.m., Friday, Aug. 19, and 9 a.m.–9 p.m., Saturday, Aug. 20. The FIRST Tech Challenge is a mid-level high school robotics program (FIRST is an acronym for For Inspiration & Recognition of Science & Technology). Fairgoers will attempt to score points by driving robots around a field set up on a table.
  • Touch the Earth, presented by Recreational Services, 9 a.m.–2 p.m. This interactive display spotlights the services that Touch the Earth offers. Tents and other outdoor equipment will be on display. Staff from Touch the Earth will be on hand to explain their outdoor adventure programs as well as ways that Iowans and others can be more active on their own.

The booth will feature appearances by former Hawkeye standouts. Matt Whitaker (football, 1990–92) will be at the booth from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., Friday, Aug. 19; Chuck Yagla (wrestling, 1973–76) will be on hand from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., Saturday, Aug. 20; Butch Devine (wrestling, 1964–65) and John Filloon (football, 1988–91) will be at the booth from 3 to 5 p.m., Saturday, Aug. 20; and Gary Dolphin, voice of the Hawkeyes, will be present from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., Sunday, Aug. 21.
