The University of Iowa creative writing programs in fiction, poetry and nonfiction were once again ranked No. 1, individually and collectively, in the United States in the Master of Fine Arts (MFA) “Top Fifty” list in the September/October 2011 issue of Poets & Writers magazine.
View the article and the 2012 “Top 50″ list at www.pw.org/content/mfa_nation. MFA programs were assessed on the basis of 18 measures, half of which are ordered rankings and half of which are unranked categories of important program features. The Iowa Writers’ Workshop was the first graduate degree program in creative writing, but there are now 151 full-residency creative-writing MFA programs in the United States.
Poets & Writers Inc. is the primary source of information, support and guidance for creative writers. Founded in 1970, it is the nation’s largest nonprofit literary organization serving poets, fiction writers and creative nonfiction writers.
The Iowa Writers’ Workshop — with its pioneering programs in fiction and poetry — and the Nonfiction Writing Program are units of the UI College of Liberal Arts and Sciences. The history and reputation of the UI writing programs was a significant factor in UNESCO’s 2008 designation of Iowa City as the first U.S. City of Literature.
