Berkowitz receives grant to study digital communication

The U.S. Department of Education has awarded UI professor Dan Berkowitz a $70,000 grant to study training for the digital creative industries.

Berkowitz is an associate dean in the Graduate College and a faculty member in the School of Journalism and Mass Communication in the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences. The project is a collaboration with UI PhD alumnus James Terkeurst, director of the Institute of Digital Innovation at Teesside University in the United Kingdom, and colleagues at the University of South Carolina and Gavle University in Sweden. The funding is provided through the European Union–United States Atlantis Program.

Over a two-year period, investigators will map current practice and trends in vocational education and training within the digital creative industries. Such industries comprise 7 percent of the world’s gross domestic product, but a gap exists between education provision and rapidly changing needs in digital communication. To help address the issue, the research team intends to identify needs, develop best practices and training models, and establish connections between educators and industry.
