International Russian guitar fest to be held in Eastern Iowa

The International Annual Russian Guitar Festival and Seminar (IARGUS) will be held Thursday–Sunday, Oct. 6–9, in venues in Iowa City and Cedar Rapids.

For all concerts, general admission is $12 ($8 students and seniors). Iowa City–based events include:

  • IARGUS 2011 grand opening, 7 p.m., Congregational Church, 30 North Clinton Street. This event will feature presentation of the new CD The Lviv Lute and a screening of the short film Take Off One Ear!, an experimental documentary featuring the recording process for The Lviv Lute. A festival preview concert will follow.
  • A solo concert by Russian virtuoso Vladimir Sumin, 8 p.m., Friday, Oct. 7, at Congregational Church.
  • The Timofeyev Ensemble, Aleksandr Menshikov, and Vadim Kolpakov will perform Jewish music with Russian-Gypsy overtones at 3 p.m., Sunday, Oct. 9, at University of Iowa Hillel, 122 East Market Street, Iowa City.
  • The IARGUS 2011 Gala Concert, featuring Vladimir Sumin, Zingaresca, Dan Caraway, Alexander Menshikov, Vadim Kolpakov, and Oleg Timofeyev performing a selection of festival highlights, will be held at 7 p.m., Sunday, Oct. 9, at Congregational Church.

The festival is organized by the International Academy for Russian Music, Arts, and Culture in collaboration with University of Iowa International Programs.
