Hancher presents National Chamber Choir of Ireland Oct. 20

The University of Iowa’s Hancher will present some of Europe’s leading vocal artists when the National Chamber Choir of Ireland performs at 7 p.m., Thursday, Oct. 20, in St. Mary’s Catholic Church, 228 East Jefferson Street in Iowa City. The choir is under the direction of renowned conductor Paul Hillier.

Tickets are $45 ($40.50 for senior citizens, $22.50 for youth, and $10 for college students) and are available at the Hancher Box Office, located on the first floor of the south end of the Old Capitol Town Center near the parking ramp. Tickets can be bought over the phone (319-335-1160 or 800-426-2437) or walk-up business from 10 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. on weekdays, or online at www.hancher.uiowa.edu. Any remaining tickets will be available for one hour before show time at St. Mary’s Catholic Church.

The choir has earned its reputation as one of the most distinguished choral ensembles in Europe by performing diverse and challenging work ranging from early to contemporary music. The program for the Hancher performance will include Acallam na Senórach (The Colloquy of the Elders) by contemporary composer Tarik O’Regan. The piece is grounded in ancient Irish mythologies. The program will also include work by Brahms and Bach.

The National Chamber Choir of Ireland was founded in 1991 by composer and conductor Colin Mawby. Brazilian conductor Celso Antunes led the ensemble until early 2007. In 2008, Hillier joined the choir as artistic director and chief conductor. The ensemble travels around Europe and the world, including a 2011 St. Patrick’s Day appearance at the White House.
