Members of the University of Iowa Veterans Association are participating in the Remembrance Day National Roll Call from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. this Veterans Day, Friday Nov. 11, on the east Pentacrest lawn of the UI campus.
Volunteers are invited to help the association members by taking a turn to read for 15 minutes from a list of names that includes 6,300-plus Americans who have been killed in wars in the last decade.
The event is part of a nationwide grassroots effort to honor American service men and women and is sponsored by The Veterans Knowledge Community of NASPA Student Affairs Administrators in Higher Education.
Along with more than 180 participating schools in all 50 states, local community members will read the names as well. UI Army ROTC members will post colors, and U.S. Congressman Dave Loebsack will say a few words and read some of the names at 10 a.m. There will be a simultaneous nationwide moment of silence observed at 1 p.m. Central Standard Time.
For more information or to volunteer, call the UI Veterans Center at 319-335-3152 or 319-384-2020.
