I.C. police request help in finding assault suspect

University of Iowa Department of Public Safety Director Chuck Green is urging local citizens to assist the Iowa City Police Department in identifying an individual who tried to strangle an Iowa City police officer at 2:10 a.m., Friday, Nov. 18, in the 300 block of Burlington Street.

Police report that the officer was on routine patrol when he saw traffic being disrupted by a white male in his early 20s, approximately 6’1′ or 6’2″ in height with a thin build and short brown hair, and wearing blue jeans and white shoes. Prior to the incident he was wearing a gray t-shirt, which was torn off during the fight.

When the man attempted to flee, a struggle ensued for about two minutes, during which time the man placed the officer in a chokehold before a bystander helped end the struggle. The officer was treated for scrapes and bruises at the hospital, then released.

A police in-car video showing the suspect can be viewed at: www.icgov.org/docs/suspect.wmv.

Anyone with information about the crime is urged to call Iowa City Area CrimeStoppers—which is offering a $1,000 cash reward for information leading to the arrest of the suspect—at 319-356-5276.
