Writers’ Workshop poets Swensen, Bedient to read Dec. 1

Poets Cole Swensen and Cal Bedient, faculty members in the University of Iowa Writers’ Workshop, will read from their work in a free event at 8 p.m., Thursday, Dec. 1, in the Frank Conroy Reading Room of the Dey House on the UI campus.

Swensen, a member of the workshop’s permanent faculty, is the author of 13 volumes of poetry, most recently Greensward. She has been a finalist for the Los Angeles Times Book Award and the National Book Award, and her work has won the Iowa Poetry Prize, the San Francisco State Poetry Center Book Award, the New American Writing Award, and the National Poetry Series.

Visiting faculty member Bedient is the author of three books of poems, Candy Necklace, The Violence of the Morning, and Days of Unwilling, as well as five books of criticism, the latest of which is The Yeats Brothers and Modernism’s Love of Mobility.

He is a professor in the English department at the University of California, Los Angeles, and a co-editor of the University of California’s New California Poetry Series and of Lana Turner: A Journal of Poetry & Opinion.
