Performance will preview upcoming Turn of the Screw

An upcoming University of Iowa Martha-Ellen Tye Opera Theater production of Benjamin Britten’s The Turn of the Screw will be previewed in a free event at 8 p.m., Saturday, Dec. 10, in the Englert Theatre in downtown Iowa City.

The event will include excerpts from what has been described as “one of the world’s spookiest operas,” and a lecture by stage director Alan E. Hicks, a visiting faculty member in the School of Music this year.

The Turn of the Screw, which premiered in 1954, was based on the ghost-story novella by Henry James about a young governess of questionable sanity, and the ghosts who inhabit the Bly House, where she is in charge of the upbringing of two orphaned children.
