UI Mock Trial team wins third invitational championship

The University of Iowa Mock Trial (UIMT) program earned its third first-place finish of the semester and a fourth-place finish after competing Dec. 3-4 in St. Paul, Minn.

According to the American Mock Trial Association (AMTA), UIMT became the program with the most first place finishes in the country for the 2011 fall invitational season.

Seniors Melissa Osman and Will Mattessich led team 1424 to a first-place finish, beating out Drake University in the final round. Team 1425, captained by seniors Jerod Haldin and Kelly Grogg, finished in fourth place. Outstanding witness awards were given to senior Britney Matthews and sophomores Kyle McDonald and Mike Tabor.

This tournament marked UIMT’s second first-place finish in St. Paul, where nationals will be held in the spring. UIMT is one of only six programs in the country to win back-to-back national championships in the history of collegiate mock trial, and hopes to win another championship in 2012.

The UIMT program is currently ranked 18th in the nation. For more information visit www.uimocktrial.com.
