Musicians from the University of Iowa School of Music and the community gathered for the annual Holiday Tubas celebration Friday, Dec. 9, on the steps of Old Capitol on the UI Pentacrest. The UI Collegium Tubum continued its tradition of collecting new, unwrapped gifts for Toys for Tots.
Last year, the tubas premiered a “Silent Night” arrangement by euphonium student Steve Neilssen. This year’s performance of the arrangement was dedicated to Gene Wibben, longtime tubist with the Des Moines Symphony; Mel Culbertson, professor of tuba at the National Superior Conservatory in Lyon, France; and Himie Voxman, director of the UI School of Music for more than a quarter-century (1954–1980), who died Nov. 22, 2011, at the age of 99.
Enjoy the sights and sounds from this beloved UI tradition.
